In 1849, while on family business traveling by railroad through New Mexico, he became obsessed with possessing an Apache female brave who was fighting under the charge of Geronimo. As a result, he stayed in the U.S., never returning to his family and becoming a member of The Apache Brotherhood of the Wolf.
